Obituary

After 12 years and hundreds of hospitalizations/treatments/drugs/needles/tests/operations etc., Stephen made the brave decision to contact hospice to help him thru his end of life preparations. Stephen didn't want a funeral, but opted instead for a "celebration of life" party. The next day everybody dropped everything and put together a great party with lots of delicious food, love and fun. speeches were made, folks were singing, and Stephen truly had a great time. 10 days later he passed away.

Stephen Francis Verhaalen, born on Jan 10, 1962 passed away on Sunday 9/10 at 12:17 am from natural causes. He leaves behind the love & pride of his life, daughter Rowan Verhaalen. and her mother Theresa. He also leaves behind his mother Mary Gallagher, siblings Ray, Marie & Sheila and their spouses Barbara, Dennis and Steven - Step sisters Angela & Cathy Gallagher - and many great cousins, nieces, nephews. We all have such good memories !!!

Stephen lived at Genesis in Manahawkin over the past year. In that time, he made friends with so many patients & staff that when word got out about how sick he was getting, even ex-employees and ex-patients were stopping in to be with him 1 last time. Special thanks to Tom (best roommate ever!), Cheryl, Beth, Arlo, Amy, Rose, his aides, maintenance & kitchen staff, his buddy Carrie, Rob, Dina, Maria, Marica, Susan, Coal, Joe & his wife, Rita, the lady in the cowgirl hat. EVERYBODY who came to see him that talked about what a nice, wonderful & loving person he was. He was a great conversationalist, had a great laugh, and he really brought his own form of joy & sunshine to the place. Thank you all for all your support !!!

His friend Phyllis once said had an innocence about him that was just so refreshing & inviting. Yes he did.

Compassus Hospice & the Genesis Nursing staff made his death experience the best it could be. They took such good care of him & groomed him better than he would himself. It was like every day was a spa day for him. Thank you so much - you are all truly remarkable.

Stephen served in the U.S. Army for 12 years. In civilian life he worked as a truck driver for J.B. Hunt and Estees.
